CULINARY ICON
AWARD
About
The National Fried Chicken Festival (FCF) presented by Raising Cane’s is not only a celebration of one of America’s most beloved comfort foods but also an occasion to honor the culinary legends who have made significant contributions to the culinary arts, particularly in New Orleans. One of the festival’s most prestigious accolades is the Culinary Icon Award, an honor that has been presented annually since the festival’s inception in 2016.
Celebrating Culinary Excellence
The Culinary Icon Award was established to recognize and celebrate the achievements of individuals who have profoundly influenced the culinary culture of New Orleans and around the world. This award highlights the enduring legacy and innovative spirit of chefs and culinary figures who have enriched the gastronomic landscape with their unique contributions.
The award recognizes individual achievements and also underscores the rich culinary heritage of New Orleans. It serves as a reminder of the city’s vibrant food culture and the individuals who continue to shape and redefine it. By honoring these culinary icons, FCF aims to inspire future generations of chefs and food enthusiasts to uphold and innovate within the culinary traditions of our great city.
The FCF Culinary Icon Award is more than just an accolade; it is a celebration of the passion, creativity, and dedication that define New Orleans’ culinary excellence. As the festival continues to grow, so too does the legacy of the award and the illustrious individuals it honors.
Honoring Leah Chase
The inaugural award in 2016 was bestowed upon Leah Chase, the matriarch of Creole cuisine and owner of the legendary Dooky Chase Restaurant. Known as the “Queen of Creole Cuisine,” Leah Chase’s influence extends far beyond her delectable dishes. She transformed her restaurant into a hub for civil rights activism and a meeting place for cultural and political leaders. Her contributions to the culinary world and her role in shaping New Orleans’ cultural heritage made her the perfect recipient of the first Culinary Icon Award.
With Chef Leah Chase as the precedent, FCF and its presenting sponsor Raising Cane’s have continued to seek out legendary chefs worthy of the title to be honored at the festival each year.
